I'm now in Maryland after 540 miles of Virginia and 16 miles of West Virginia. It's been a wet trail the last few weeks, with more days of rain than sun. Temps have also been cooler than usual for this time of year, several nights in Shenandoah National Park were in the low 20's.
Virginia was much rockier than I expected, and while the top elevations in VA are lower than NC/Tenn the climbing was just as strenuous. Surprisingly there was a lot of bear activity in the state as well.
Maryland will be quick at only 40 miles, then on to PA and the halfway point.
